In our operations, SAFETY IS JOB # 1
- Everyone working in our mines must understand their job, and be properly trained to do it.
- We will allow no shortcuts that compromise safety, and any observed must be reported immediately.
- Productivity will not be put ahead of safety.
- Management will do whatever is needed by way of training and allocation of resources to ensure a safe mine, but everyone on the job must THINK SAFETY at all times.

The safety performance at Hillsborough’s Quinsam Coal mine in Campbell River has been outstanding. Recognition of the achievements include receipt of the John T. Ryan Safety Award in both 2001 and 2003. This award recognizes the safest coal mine in Canada. In 2000 Quinsam Coal won the provincial safety award in the category for small underground mines.

Paul Krivokuca, COO for Underground Operations and General Manager at the Quinsam Mine makes the following observations about safety at Quinsam;
A solid and unequivocal corporate commitment to safety and prudent mine planning ensuring optimum design for safe coal extraction has enabled Quinsam Coal to achieve excellence in safety.

The empowerment of the Occupational Health and Safety Committee in all aspects of Safety including taking corrective actions, finding solutions to safety problems, making recommendations, and implementing safety practices and procedures has contributed immensely to the excellent safety record.
Regular educational crew safety meetings and company provided training courses for underground miners in geology, geotechnical problems, roof bolting, and ventilation has raised the level of awareness of the safety issues surrounding these topics with the workforce.
As Hillsborough moves forward in the further development of mining operations, we will integrate the same focus and attention to safety as we have undertaken at Quinsam.
